Week 4 - October Meeting 2

October Meeting 2 - On Friendship - Concluding Thoughts

  • Prayer

  • Share highs and lows

  • Serve tea

  • Quote to reflect on and the Jesus Prayer-

  • “In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another…the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting–any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.” The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.”

– C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

  • Topic to Discuss: Examples of saints who can teach us about true friendship.

  • Let us reflect on saints who modeled true friendship like Barbara was to St. Elizabeth the New Martyr

  • What other saints can you think of?

  • Then have the “Anonymous Teapot” questions

  • Distribute small pieces of paper and pencils and have them write a question down on it, fold it up and place it in the teapot.

  • This is where the girls write questions down related to the topic (or not) and the leaders get to read them. It is ok for the leaders to place questions in there as well. Place them in an empty teapot. Try to do one round of questions that are related to the topic of friendship if possible. Then open it up to questions about anything. You will be delighted to get to know what and how the girls think through this!

  • Finish with them writing some reflections down in their journals and praying together.
